The Vision: Historic English Pub meets Boutique Hotel
On the corner of Sheep Street in Charlbury, the same spot it's stood for 500 years, The Bull welcomes road-weary travelers and trail walkers exploring the meadows and rolling hills of the English countryside in the surrounding Cotswolds.
The former coaching inn, founded in the early 1500s, has converted its barn and stables into six luxurious guest rooms, all with period charms such as exposed wooden beams, clawfoot tubs, and traditional herringbone-patterned carpet.
Four more rooms sit atop the historic pub and restaurant with its wooden booths, Chesterfield chairs, and a commanding hearth containing an inglenook fireplace. Here one can sample such local farm-to-table fare as open fire-roasted pigeon with Girolle mushrooms, washed down with a refreshing pint.
The Bull Inn recently completed an extensive refurbishment of its facilities with updates to the flooring and other amenities to accommodate contemporary visitors.
The Project
Studio Squire
The Bull's proprietors commissioned Studio Squire, a London-based interior designer, to procure a flooring option that possessed the following qualities:
Contract-grade durability to support heavy foot traffic
The natural look of sisal or seagrass
A classic English herringbone weave pattern
SynSisal® Astoria checked all three boxes. Our Netherlands-based sales representative Mark van Koningsveld responded to their initial inquiry with a pitch that promised product excellence as well as logistical expediency. As SynSisal® is developed and manufactured in Europe, delivery to the UK was fast and easy.
SynSisal® is a synthetic sisal-like woven carpet developed for use in hospitality, retail stores, and workspaces. It is manufactured with 100% recycled ECONYL, nylon yarns that are reclaimed from old fishing nets. It is rated the highest possible classification for textile durability: Class 33, and rated the highest possible for fire retardancy as well.
Ordering and Installation
Studio Squire received free carpet sample swatches and settled upon Astoria | Honey from the weave styles they tested. They then subcontracted out the procurement and installation of the broadloom rolls, and Mark arranged for a local UK carpet fitter to set up a quote and deliver the product.
As many UK carpet fitters already have a passing familiarity with flat-weave wall-to-wall carpet installation, the expert team supplemented their knowledge with detailed installation instructions and video tutorials developed specifically for SynSisal®. The skilled installation resulted in a fabulous finished product. As demonstrated in the photos seen here, the fitters executed such polished details as carpeting climbing up a stair riser and seamlessly hugging tile borders and baseboards beneath the inn's ancient stone walls.

It is unlike any other product on the marketplace for how it looks and performs in contract and hospitality settings. While there are other products out there that look like sisal, many are unbacked polypropylene which may be easy to clean but are not durable enough to withstand heavy foot traffic.
Our SynSisal® weaves are a sustainable choice in flooring. Made from 100% recycled materials (from fishing nets to recycled nylon carpeting to repurposed materials), these contract-grade weaves have low VOC contribution and are 100% regenerable.
SynSisal®: Durability & Cleanability
SynSisal® is a contract-grade carpet that is designed to stand up to heavy foot traffic, moisture, and spills. As you can see from the photo, The Bull trusts our carpet underfoot, even under the tub.
The rooms in the barn are also open to four-legged guests, so durability and cleanability were key concerns for the project. We recommend James cleaning products for any stains that may occur.
